Did you know that back pain is one of the most common medical complaints? According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), about half of all working Americans experience back pain each year! And almost all of us will have back pain at some point in our lives. In fact, the number one reason patients flock to ChiroCenter is because they are seeking relief from back pain. Although back pain sometimes goes away without treatment, it’s usually a difficult and frustrating problem.

So What Causes Back Pain?

Muscle strain, ligament sprain, ruptured discs, fractures, and irritated joints can all cause back pain. These can occur during a sports injury, car accident, or heavy lifting; but occasionally, even something really simple, like picking up a pencil from the floor can lead to injury! Also, arthritis, obesity, poor posture and stress, can cause or exacerbate your pain. Rarely, back pain can be a symptom of a serious underlying condition, such as disease of the internal organs, blood clots, or bone loss.

What Can I do To Prevent Back Injury?

Humans are definitely more productive walking upright on two feet, as opposed to crawling around or slithering on our bellies. But there’s a drawback. Simply walking puts intense pressure on the spine, muscles and bones. On top of that, we often sit improperly and lift improperly. Even if you exercise great caution while sitting, lifting, reaching, and twisting, this normal wear and tear can lead to discomfort. Here are some tips from the ACA to help prevent back problems:

  • Maintain a healthy diet and weight.
  • Exercise (under the supervision of your doctor)
  • Avoid extended inactivity or bed rest.
  • Warm up/ stretch before exercising or other physical activities
  • Maintain proper posture
  • Wear comfortable shoes (yes ladies… this means low heals J)
  • Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness. This will minimize any curve in your spine.
  • Lift with your knees
  • Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.
  • Work with your chiropractor to ensure that your work area is ergonomically correct.
